Oguchi Onyewu says he’ll ‘choke’ Janelly Farias on air

Telling your co-host you’ll choke them on live television isn’t the wisest thing to do.

Former USMNT player Oguchi Onyewu issued an on-air apology to Janelly Farias on Sunday after he made a comment threatening to choke the Mexican women’s national team defender during CBS Sports’ broadcast of the USMNT vs. Mexico game.

“I will come across this desk and choke you,” Onyewu said, seemingly jokingly, to Farias during the network’s coverage.

The internet, however, took his remark very seriously. Onyewu later apologized for his “stupid” comment.

“Early in the show, you know, throughout our banter back and forth, I got carried away for sure. And I said a stupid thing that should’ve never come out of my mouth,” Onyewu said to Farias, who was sitting alongside him.

“And I am deeply sorry for it and I apologize to you and I hope that you can forgive me and don’t take any offense to it. So, I just really want to sincerely apologize for what I said.”

Farias, without hesitation, smiled and leaned in to fist-bump Onyewu.

“I think the fact that you can say that on national television speaks volumes of you,” she said.

The moment occurred while the group was commenting on USMNT’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League final.

The event had plenty of other dramatic moments, including a fan leaping over a railing behind the CBS broadcast while running from security.

Additionally, the US team was hit with flying objects launched by Mexico fans following the team’s win. Substitute Gio Reyna was pelted with a Coca-Cola bottle, and appeared visibly injured.
