How long can the Mike White Experience last?

That is the question in Jetsland this week, with everyone’s favorite backup quarterback making his third straight start. White lit up the Bengals, then threw a touchdown against the Colts before exiting with a forearm injury. Now, he will try to beat the Bills, who have the No. 1 defense in the NFL in terms of yards and points allowed.

The last time White was in front of the MetLife Stadium crowd, they were chanting his name. Will they be doing it again Sunday or will they be ready to move back to Zach Wilson?

“We’ll see,” White said this week. “I hope there’s ‘Mike White’ chants because that means the offense is doing something good, so I hope to hear some type of cheering from the fans.”

The Jets (2-6) are still interesting at this point because of White. Head coach Robert Saleh left the door open this week for White to remain the starter even once Wilson is fully healed from his right knee injury, which could be as early as next week. If White plays well and the Jets topple the first-place Bills (5-3), then things will get very intriguing.

White is enjoying his newfound status as fan favorite after lingering in the shadows since he was drafted by the Cowboys in 2018.

“It’s kind of crazy. It’s cool,” White said. “You got to soak it in when you can and enjoy it when you can, but it does kind of catch you off guard because we’re in the middle of the season, trying to win games and then heading into it, I’m like, all right, I’m going to be Zach’s backup, I’m going to help him as much as I can, stay ready in my process, but also help him. And then the script gets flipped a little bit and now you got to play until Zach gets healthy. It’s a midst of the season to be able to have to change like that is definitely crazy, but it’s part of the job that you have to figure it out.”

The offense has been rejuvenated by White’s insertion into the lineup. The Jets have had their two best offensive showings in each of the past two games, with both White and third-stringer Josh Johnson at quarterback last week in Indianapolis.

The Bills are coming off a stunning 9-6 loss to the Jaguars and could be refocused and hungry to get back on track. They’ll have to stop the Mike White Experience to do that.
